Knoxville Symphony Orchestra: Masterworks

Knoxville Symphony Orchestra: Masterworks at Tennessee Theatre

Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 holds a different emotional space than his sunnier works. It opens with urgency, carries drama, and offers pianist Ying Li a real chance to show what she brings to the keyboard. The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra: Masterworks performs Thursday, May 13, 2027, at 7:30 PM at the Tennessee Theatre. Music Director Aram Demirjian leads this season finale, pairing Mozart with Grażyna Bacewicz's Overture and Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5.

Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 gives the evening its weight. Demirjian describes it as one of the composer's most powerful orchestral statements, and the work spans remarkable scale, intensity and emotional depth. The program covers more than 150 years of orchestral music, from Bacewicz's vibrant opening to a 20th-century landmark that demands a full orchestra and your full attention.

This concert is part of the Masterworks season's closing program. If you've followed the orchestra's programming, this is the night that ties together months of listening. If you're looking for an occasion to dress up and spend an evening immersed in live music, a symphony finale offers that. Bring someone who appreciates a complete program, not background music.
