Knoxville Symphony Orchestra: Masterworks

Knoxville Symphony Orchestra: Masterworks at Tennessee Theatre

A solo piano enters against the orchestra, and suddenly Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 puts one musician in conversation with many. The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra presents Masterworks at Tennessee Theatre on Friday, January 15, 2027, at 7:30 PM, with pianist Jonathan Biss joining Music Director Aram Demirjian for a program built around Beethoven's enduring influence. If that concerto has held your attention on recordings, here's your chance to watch Biss and the orchestra bring it to life in front of you.

Demirjian frames the concerto with two celebrated Beethoven overtures—Coriolan and Egmont—and places contemporary works by Unsuk Chin and Caroline Shaw alongside them. Chin's subito con forza was written to mark Beethoven's 250th birthday, drawing its title from one of his most familiar performance markings. Shaw's watermark continues the dialogue between past and present, showing how today's composers engage with the traditions Beethoven helped establish. The program offers you a chance to hear classical pillars and living voices in one evening.

Invite someone who shares your interest in orchestral music or who's been curious about what a live symphony sounds like. A January concert gives you both something to anticipate and a reason to make Friday night count. Tennessee Theatre provides the setting; the program gives you the conversation afterward.
