Indoor Cats

Indoor Cats at Clarence Brown Lab Theatre

A filmmaker loses her grip on a project, then on her relationship, then on what counts as art when the subject is a housecat. Mora V. Harris's Indoor Cats arrives at Clarence Brown Lab Theatre in Knoxville on Thursday, March 4, 2027, at 7:30 PM. Jules retreats to her parents' cabin in Central Pennsylvania as the world shuts down, only to stumble into filmmaking for felines and a flirtation with the naturalist next door. If you've ever watched your creative ambitions collide with desire and uncertainty, this comedy might feel uncomfortably close.

Director Daniel Bird Tobin leads a production that takes one woman's unraveling seriously without turning it into a lecture. Scenic designer Ellie Cornett, costume designer Malin Sender, lighting designer Brek Dodson, sound designer Zixia Li and projection designer Miguel Santiago give the cabin, the neighbor and the cat videos a place to collide. Harris calls her play wry, original and wonderfully strange. The appeal is watching Jules try to find meaning when nothing around her cooperates.

Invite someone who understands that art, attraction and absurdity arrive at the same time. A partner who laughs at your creative disasters. A friend who stayed creative through uncertainty. Theater gives you a reason to pick a night, choose seats together and let someone else's chaos entertain you for a while. Harris's unusual premise gives that shared evening a distinct comic focus.
